How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him ^aof whom they have never heard? ▼

ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;

And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ ▼

τὰ ἀγαθά.

But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ ▼

▼Isaiah 53:1

But ⁿthey have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ^o“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?”

ἀλλ᾽ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ· Ἠσαΐας γὰρ λέγει· Κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

So ^pfaith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

ἄρα ἡ πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς, ἡ δὲ ἀκοὴ διὰ ῥήματος ▼

But I ask: did they not hear? Of course they did:

‘Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.’ ▼

But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for

and their words to the ends of the world.”

Ἀλλὰ λέγω, μὴ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; μενοῦνγε· Εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν ὁ φθόγγος αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰ ῥήματα αὐτῶν.

Again I ask: did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, ‘I will make you envious by those who are not a nation;
I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.’ ▼

But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

with a ^xfoolish nation I will make you angry.”

And Isaiah boldly says, ‘I was found by those who did not seek me;
I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.’ ▼

Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”

But concerning Israel he says, ‘All day long I have held out my hands

πρὸς δὲ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ λέγει· Ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐξεπέτασα τὰς χεῖράς μου πρὸς λαὸν ἀπειθοῦντα καὶ ἀντιλέγοντα.
